What Is Color Grading?

Color grading is a post-production process in video production that involves adjusting and stylizing the color, contrast, brightness, and saturation of video footage to achieve a specific aesthetic look and emotional tone. It is a two-stage process: color correction establishes a neutral, technically correct baseline by fixing exposure problems, white balance inconsistencies, and color casts introduced by lighting conditions or camera settings; color grading then applies a creative treatment on top of this corrected baseline to create a distinctive visual style.

Color grading is one of the most powerful tools in a video editor's arsenal. The same footage, graded differently, can feel warm and intimate, cold and corporate, gritty and cinematic, or clean and commercial. Color communicates mood at a subconscious level before a viewer processes any narrative content.

The Technical Foundation: Color Correction

Before creative grading begins, footage must be color corrected. This involves setting black and white points to ensure true blacks and whites, adjusting exposure so the image sits within the optimal histogram range, correcting white balance so skin tones appear natural, and ensuring color consistency across clips filmed at different times or with different cameras. Color correction ensures the audience perceives the footage as a coherent visual world rather than a collection of mismatched shots.

Creative Color Grading Techniques

Lift, gamma, and gain controls adjust shadows, midtones, and highlights independently, enabling nuanced tonal manipulation. Hue, saturation, and luminance (HSL) controls allow specific color channels to be adjusted independently — making a subject's sky more vivid without affecting skin tones. LUTs (Look-Up Tables) are preset color transformations that apply a defined look instantly, derived from film emulsion simulations or creative color treatments. Vignetting subtly darkens image edges to focus attention on the center. Color wheels enable precise tonal color pushes — warm highlights combined with cool shadows create the classic cinematic teal-and-orange look.

Color Grading Software

DaVinci Resolve is the industry-standard color grading application, used in Hollywood film and professional commercial production. It offers node-based color processing with extraordinary precision and is available free for most professional workflows. Adobe Premiere Pro includes the Lumetri Color panel, which provides accessible grading tools integrated with an editing-first workflow. Final Cut Pro's Color Board and bundled plugins serve editors working within the Apple ecosystem. For high-end cinematic work, the colorist is typically a specialized role separate from the editor.

Color Grading in Brand Video Production

For brand video content, color grading plays a strategic role beyond aesthetics. A consistent color grade across all brand video assets creates visual cohesion — viewers recognize a brand's content style before reading any text or hearing any audio. Brand color palettes translate into grading decisions: a brand using warm golden tones in its visual identity should reflect those warm values in its video grade. At Sagara, color grading is treated as a deliberate brand communication tool, not a technical afterthought, ensuring every video asset reinforces the client's visual identity.
